Teachers as Writers (252:521)
Teachers as Writers is a three credit graduate course. It is designed to move teachers recursively from writing, to theories about the writing process, to teaching writing, and back to their own more informed practice of writing. Two components of the course are discussion of theory and reflection on one’s own experience in the context of that theory. As a class participant, you will read, discuss and respond in writing to a variety of approaches to the writing process and the teaching of writing. During the course, you will try your hand at a variety of writing topics / genres / situations. You will share your writing in small and large group sessions and receive feedback from your peers and instructors. You will make decisions about which pieces to revise and how to revise them. The most important aspect of this course is not your ability as a writer, but rather your ability to reflect on your own writing process and your understanding of theory in order to apply both to the practice of teaching writing.
